Scott McCarthy [00:00:01]:
Episode one ninety nine of the Peak Performance Leadership podcast. We do the year in review. That’s right. It’s the 15 biggest episodes of 2021. Are you ready for this? Alright. Let’s do it. Yes. Welcome one.
Scott McCarthy [00:01:12]:
Welcome all. It is your chief leadership officer, Scott McCarthy. So great to have you here today. And today’s episode is slightly different. I am solo, but what I’m doing is a rundown of 2021. That’s right. The biggest 15 episodes according to you, the listeners, of this past year, and I’m gonna run them down. They’re in no particular order per se, just other than, you know, from, the lowest number episode up to the highest numbered episode in terms of release dates.
Scott McCarthy [00:01:49]:
But I wanted to run by the top 15 because to give you an idea of what you listeners are asking for, More importantly, to re highlight some of the great guests that we’ve had on the show this past year. So that is today’s episode. I recorded this in directly into our Facebook group, leadership skills, for managers who want to be leaders, not bosses. You can check that that out at movingforwardleadership.com/group, and that will bring you directly to it. And, yeah, other than that, I don’t think I’m going to hold you back any longer. So why don’t you sit back, relax, and enjoy this? Slightly different, but year in review of 2021. Good day, leaders. How is everyone doing out there? It’s great to come with a live video and a video, which is and, well, podcast episode, actually, that this is gonna be we are going to be, I should say, going over the twenty twenty one and year review of 2021.
Scott McCarthy [00:03:17]:
That is the goal today. So so great to have you here. Happy New Year, by the way, for all those who are listening real time or, you know, if you’re listening real time or you just, you know, you’re catching up. No big deal. Hope you enjoyed a great fantastic holiday with friends, family, and hopefully you can get away from this whole COVID type thing that’s going on. Alright. So let’s get into it, shall we? And that is, let’s dive into, the 15 biggest episodes of this past year. Now, if you wanna check out these individual episodes themselves, that’s all you need to do is go to movingforwardleadership.com/x, and x being the episode number, and that will take you directly to it.
Scott McCarthy [00:04:14]:
Sorry. I’ll be I’ll be drinking a cup of coffee as I go through this because I am a bit of a coffee aholic. If you don’t know that yet, you just learned something new about good old chief leader show officer Scott McCarthy. Alright. So let’s dive into the 15 biggest episodes of this past year, shall we? And the first one being coming out with a bang. And that’s episode one fifty, one five zero with Jason Redmond. Jason Redmond is the former US Navy Seal who got shot up in Iraq, and, basically put a who didn’t basically, but he put a sign on his door of the hospital during his recovery, which basically said, if you come here to cry, weep, wallow, all those things, don’t go elsewhere. I’m here to recover and get back to whatever the best version of me will be from going out.
Scott McCarthy [00:05:09]:
And what he talked about in that episode was how we overcome adversity. Right? As leaders, we always over face adversity whether that is with our teams, ourselves, our organization. Adversity is what we do, so this is what this episode was all about. Now, on the heels of that episode was one fifty three, one five three of Michael Hamilton, senior vice president of the World Bank of Canada. And he also talked about overcoming adversity from a little bit of a different, you know, angle. And this is probably the most surprising episode of the year in that Michael came out and talking about the first Gulf War and being a rookie troop commander in there and his lessons as a leader in going through that. And basically, hey, we wasn’t even expected to live and survive the first battle. So great to say Michael did live, has survived that battle, and he was able to come out with a whopper of episode of one fifty three.
Scott McCarthy [00:06:15]:
We talked to, again, overcoming adversity, looking at, basically, you know, looking at keeping our ourselves focused on the main goals and and the benefits and the pluses that are upcoming. So check that one out. One fifty five, my good friend, Matt Kaman. And Matt is a kinda into the neuro linguistic pace. He’s all about, flow and focus, and that’s exactly what we talked about in that episode is how is us leaders we can get into that flow state and basically be there and keep ourselves in flow as long as possible. So that was episode one fifty five. One five five with Matt Command. One fifty eight.
Scott McCarthy [00:07:01]:
Let’s change we’re gonna change things up. We had Kathy Bush and Tara Peter on the show, and they’re gonna be talk they talked about motivating the demotivated employee, and that’s something which we are faced with a lot more now with, as COVID drags on and the impacts both negative and, well, positive, but the impacts that has not only in ourselves, but our people and organizations. Tara and, Cathy talked about a lot of that and how we can get our people motivated again, figure out why they’re demotivated in the first place, how we can remotivate them and get them moving in the right direction. So check that one out at one fifty eight. Episode one sixty, moving along. Dan Pontifract. And what Dan talked about in this episode was how to be a leader who matters, Matters to themselves, matters to their teams, and matters to their organization. Dan fell Canadian, we talked about his book, his new book out there, and and it was a great conversation of about that, about mattering and and looking beyond just yourself, but also looking towards how we can take care of our people and make them matter.
Scott McCarthy [00:08:22]:
In episode one sixty three, perhaps the most special episode of the year, I wanna say one six three, and that is with Heather Younger, and we were talking about the art of caring leadership. Now the reason why this one was so special is because I personally am in her book. Heather interviewed me on her podcast episode or her podcast I should say, And what she did was actually take all the lessons from her podcast and then turned around and wrote this amazing book, the art of caring leadership, which you can grab in the show notes. And I’m actually in that book still still blows my mind, to this day. So thank you again, Heather. You’re far too kind far too kind, darling. Move along to the very next episode actually, and we got a bit of a string here. So that was one sixty three with Heather Younger.
Scott McCarthy [00:09:17]:
Next one is one sixty four Tim Ringo. And what Tim was talking about on his episode was how we can increase productivity amongst ourselves as well as our individuals. A lot of people out there are having issues with productivity with themselves, with the people, and this is the reason why I had Tim on the show. So he’s got a load of just easy things that you can do implement right now. Actual items that you can implement right now to turn around and you know start being more productive with yourself as well as having your team being more productive. Episode one sixty five right away the next one was the talent war with Mike Cirelli and George Randall. So a former US Navy seal plus a former, army, soldier got together and, wrote a book on winning the talent war. And basically, what we talked about was how to go out and, you know, find the best people for your company, for your organization, and how to hire them and bring them on, and how do we properly onboard people, and so on so forth.
Scott McCarthy [00:10:34]:
And most importantly, how do we retain these amazing people? So that was episode one six five with Mike Cirelli and George Randall. Moving along, episode one seventy one seven zero with Susan Fema. We talked about controlling the chaos of our world and us as leaders. It is way too easy for us to get sucked up into the chaos, get brought into that whirlwind, and no longer think clearly, no longer basically control the situation, but rather react to the situation. And if you know me and if you’ve heard me talk at all, you know that I am more about pro being proactive than reactive. And from there, I’ll tell you that, this is a great episode for you to get a better understanding of what it means to be proactive vice reactive and how we can get out of that reactive state and into the proactive state. Moving along, episode one seven three, one 70 three. That was with Andrew Friedman, and we talked about how to thrive with a high performing culture.
Scott McCarthy [00:11:56]:
And Andrew goes over his book, thrive, during this, episode. And really, we dive into everything. I mean, everything because a high performing culture basically touches everything. Everything we talk about here at the podcast, from leading yourself, your people, and your organization. So how you can be a leader that enables people to thrive, how you can, you know, empower people to thrive, and how you can build a culture for people to thrive within. So again, that was Andrew Friedman one seven three, thrive with a high performing culture. Moving along, January, we have David Horsager. And we were talking about how to be a trusted leader.
Scott McCarthy [00:12:43]:
And trust is the cornerstone of leadership. If your people don’t trust you, you can’t effectively lead them moving forward. So this is why I brought David onto the show. We talked about why trust is so important, how you can ensure that you build trust with your team members, your peers, your superiors, how you can get that trust back in case, you know, it’s been broken, and so much more. David, yeah, this is a great up great episode. Again, based around his book about being a trusted leader, one that matters. So check it out, episode one seven six, one 70 six. Moving along, episode one eight two, one 80 two, Leaky Labgi, and that is death to your BS or blind spots or the other b s.
Scott McCarthy [00:13:38]:
Right? Basically, leaky comes on the show and he talks to us about how we can identify our blind spots, what what it means, and how we can get past our blind spots as leaders. Excuse it. He also talks about how or why, you know, blind spots are so detrimental to our ability to lead and our, you know, what impacts it has on our people, organization, and ourselves. So check that one out. Super inspirational guy. He comes with a heck of a story and background that you don’t wanna miss, and that is in episode one eight two. Moving along, one eight five with the inc Com’s leadership guy, Peter Cottomy. He’s been on the show multiple times.
Scott McCarthy [00:14:29]:
And in this episode, we talk about dealing with jerks, micromanaging bosses, horrible coworkers, the gambit. And Mike or sorry, Peter talks to us about how we can get or navigate all these, you know, issues with people, and how we can basically lead ourselves as well as lead our team away from all the negativity that comes from these people, and rather, let’s focus on moving forward. So that was the inc.com’s leadership guide, Peter Economy, and that is episode one eight five. Coming in fourteenth place well, not fourteenth place, but the fourteenth, of the top 15 episode. By the way, these are no order whatsoever other than from beginning to the end in their episode numbers. But anyway, episode one eight nine with Mark Polimarepoulos, former CIA agent, former leader within the CIA who comes talking to us about all the dark secrets of the CIA and leading in the CIA. Not quite, but same time, he does, reveal what he can reveal about his time as being a officer with the agency. So it was awesome episode.
Scott McCarthy [00:15:55]:
The first of this podcast, I have a former CIA agent on the show, and that was with Mark Polianopolis, episode one eight nine. And then finally, episode I think we all could use and listen to a few times just because, you know what, this is needed. And this is episode one ninety three with Bob Nelson and Mario Tamayo. And as how we can make work more fun. The co authors of their book, Make Work Fun and Get Work Done, they come on the show, and they were talking exactly that. How we can actually make work a bit more fun and get people to enjoy themselves. Because when they enjoy themselves, they try harder. They, you know, are more connected with the organization.
Scott McCarthy [00:16:46]:
They’re more dedicated to it because they just love what they’re doing. And that is exactly what Bob and Mario come on the show and talk about. And that ladies and gentlemen are the top 15 episodes from the peak performance leadership podcast, in 2021 again. So if you haven’t listened to any of those, you can go back and go to movingforwardleadership.com/ the episode number. Right? You can also subscribe to the show if you’re not already subscribed for whatever reason. And that’s at movingforwardleadership.com/subscribe. And, you know, keep tuned. Keep tuned because there are a lot of great things around the corner for us.
Scott McCarthy [00:17:34]:
2022 is definitely coming tomorrow. But with that, I do have a number of plans and that the biggest one being the, leader growth mastermind. Right here, we’ll be getting it together and developing this mastermind for you to enable you to, you know, interact with other leaders in similar situations or have been in similar situations as you so that you can, you know, bounce your problems off of them and, you know, get some advice, get some ideas. I will be obviously facilitating the mastermind. And we’ll be talking about, you know, the three domains from leading yourself to leading your team, leading your organization, how we can do that, holding you account. Right? Setting up some goals and holding you account for the goals throughout the mastermind and moving forward. So if that is of interest to you, be sure to check it out at movingforwardleadership.com/leader-growth. And links are here in the show notes as well as on the website.
Scott McCarthy [00:18:43]:
So check us out, moving forward leadership. That is it for me for this episode today. I wish you all a very happy sorry, a very happy New Year. It is 2021 is done. Let’s put a pin in it. 2022, let’s get ready to rock it. Alright? And if you’re having troubles with goals and goal setting, if you’re one of those New Year’s resolutioners who tends to, give up by February 1 like most people, then check out my power goals program. And that is at movingforwardleadership.com/power.
Scott McCarthy [00:19:23]:
And what that will do is it’s a program to help you achieve your goals and stick to them. Alright? Because we just if we keep doing the same thing we’ve been doing and expecting different results, guess what? That’s actually considered to be insanity, and I know you’re not insane because you’re listening to this show. So that is it. Alright. Ladies and gentlemen, happy New Year to you all. Take care, and we’ll see you next time. Remember as always, lead, don’t boss. Thanks.
